English Language Learners
The goal of the program for English language learners is to provide instruction so that students can become fully proficient in English and meet the same challenging state academic content and student achievement standards as all other children are expected to meet.
The main ELL program model used at elementary, middle and high school levels is English content-based instruction.
ELL teachers emphasize teaching English while also teaching the main objectives of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) in math, science, social studies/history and language arts. With content-based instruction, children learn the academic content necessary to meet passing requirements in grade-level classes in order to be promoted to the next grade level, to pass Virginia's mandated standardized tests in which are in English, and to graduate from a Virginia high school. Thus, students learn grade-level content while they develop their English skills.
